A Note from our Principal...
Welcome Back! We are excited to begin the new school year. This school year we continue providing great opportunities for all of our students. The mission of CPS is to provide a high quality public education for every child, in every neighborhood, that prepares each for success in college, career and civic life. Hurley’s mission is to educate all of our students with a rigorous educational program.
We will continue using the Summit Learning platform for grades 5th through 8th this school year. The platform includes a teacher designed comprehensive curriculum. Besides the academics, students learn to develop his/hers abilities needed to establish and maintain academic goals and to individually advance in the classroom. Our students will continue to develop their learning social emotional habits such as self-control, self and social awareness, personal growth, perseverance, academic tenacity, academic self-direction and civic identity.
Likewise, the dual language program will now reach the 3rd grade. In the words of Dr. Sonia Soltero, DePaul University, “knowing more than one language has economic, academic, and cognitive advantages as well as health, social and cultural advantages.” Hurley’s dual language teachers have been working hard this summer to strengthen the learning curriculum for our students. I urge you to speak to them about the program.
In the Fine Arts Department, we will continue with the Mariachi Program and School Band. Our Fine Arts teachers, Mr. Lopez and Mr. Darwell, provided classes for our band and mariachi students during the summer. Congratulations to them for making it possible for our students to perform at the Fiesta del Sol and the Network 10 “Back to School” event.
In other news, Hurley School fee is $25.00 this year. You can pay the fee electronically by simply visiting our website, Hurley.cps.edu or just send the fee in an envelope to classroom teacher. The school fee is used to pay consumable materials used by students, fieldtrips, student incentives, and internet protection programs, among others.
Lastly, I would like to invite you our Open House on Wednesday, September 19 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Come, visit, and meet your child’s teacher. I hope to count on your presence and your support so that we can celebrate your child’s academic success.
Kick off the New School Year with the Right Tools!
